I was going to write a series about the assisted living facility I used to work in, and maybe I still will, but right now I have something cooler to write about.  I like writing about cool things.

There’s this guy, Matt Baumgartner…  He owns Bombers Burrito Bar (We’ve been to the Schenectady location.  Awesome place. Great staff.  Even better food.) and writes at Friday Puppy.  He’s begun collecting donations to help the owner and staff of Lark Tavern.

There was a fire sometime this morning, and the tavern is out of commission for repairs.  The job market is shitty, and the cost of repairs is never fully covered by insurance, so Matt has agreed to help raise money and find employment for Tess’s staff.

O and I have never been to Lark Tavern, which is a shame, really, considering we have friends who live on Lark Street.  But with people like Matt Baumgartner so willing to lend a hand, it’s gotta be an awesome place to spend an evening.  (more…)

Let’s talk about New York State’s child support enforcement, shall we? I know, because of all the deadbeat parents, it’s a touchy subject.  We want to make sure things work out to reflect what’s best for our kids, because they are our future, or some such.

To start, let me make clear that my point of view is coming from being married to a man who pays a grand total of $1200 a month for seven children to two different women.  That doesn’t seem like a lot until you take into consideration that it’s over half his paycheck.  Because child support enforcement, and, in effect, New York State, can sue the company he works for if they don’t, the money, by court order, comes out of his check before he even sees it, so it is impossible for him to be late or not send it.  (more…)

May 22nd, 2010: Project SKIP – Revitalizing Jerry Burrell Park, Schenectady, NY

Project SKIP (Schenectady Kids Imagine and Play) is a community project sponsored by Union College, Schenectady Weed & Seed and the Schenectady Inner City Ministry.  They, and many others, are gathering on May 22, 2010 in Jerry Burrell Park on Hamilton Hill to rebuild and revitalize the park so Schenectady children will have safer playground equipment and a nicer park to play in.  And to bring a sense of unity back to the community.  (more…)
